Patience

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

-Colossians 3:12 NIV

Patience is lacking in our world today. People are so quick to get mad and curse someone out if they did an action they didn’t agree with. I saw a video of this lady yelling at McDonald’s team members because they were out of cookies. It was extremely sad because humans are not perfect (and as someone who used to work in fast food, things run out from time to time). Under the video, the comment section was filled with people who were rooting her on. They were saying things like, “I know that’s right!” and “That will teach them.”

Especially in a work situation, people are usually trying their best with what they are given. I remember one night of work, there was a limited supply of chicken (due to a lack of management). I was the shift leader that night and countless people spoke very nasty to me. It wasn’t my fault! I was doing the best I had with the little that remained. The few people who were still sweet to me refreshed my inner man. That was a HORRIBLE night of work!

Because of that job I had, I grew A LOT in patience. It takes a great amount to agitate me. But even I have my moments where I feel like I’m gonna lose it. That’s because we aren’t meant to deal with situations in our own strength. When we’re connected to the Holy Spirit, we have the ability to wait like He does. Try these things next time you’re in a trying circumstance.

Peace

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.”

-Colossians 3:15 NLT

The world would be such a better place if we all lived at peace with one another. Could you imagine? It’d be like the movies where all the neighbors get along and know each other by name. People would share with others and love would spread. We’d have more friends than enemies and I believe the world itself would be a brighter place.

Unfortunately, the sad truth is our world is not currently in that state. Certain neighborhoods are cluttered with crime and hatred. I don’t understand what causes someone to murder a person. Now a days, there’s articles of parents killing their own child. If a person could do that to their own offspring, what would they be willing to do to a random human in their way?

Although we can’t change the entire world, we can start with the person in the mirror. The Bible teaches us to be the light of this world. Let’s learn how to become part of the solution. Read more

Joy

“Rejoice in the Lord always. Again I will say rejoice!”

-Phillippians 4:4

The other day, my husband and I were at Wal-Mart. He whispered to me, “Have you noticed people always look angry?” I scanned the room and He was right. The majority of the people looked like Eeyore from Winnie The Pooh. They looked miserable. Where was the joy? I did not want to get in any of their way, that’s for sure. This grumpy faced lady passed by me and I smiled at her. To my surprise, she smiled back. A smile can change everything.

Joyful people are so fun to be around. When your day is going rough, they have the ability to make you smile and laugh. Their perspective is different and surrounding yourself with them can lighten your focus on life. Jesus said He came that we may have life in abundance, and that means our joy, too!

The core desire of every person is to be happy. Your joy is what the enemy wants to steal from you. He may attack your stuff but that’s because he wants you to be flushed with aggravation, frustration, stress, and depression. I guarantee that he wouldn’t attack something if he knew it wouldn’t affect you. What would be the point?

“Do not sorrow, for the joy of the Lord is your strength.”

Love

“Owe no man anything except to love one another, for he who loves another has fulfilled the law.”

-Romans 13:8

Love is the most important thing to me in my walk with God. And to be honest, I’m not that great with it. I do a good job at times, but I’ve realized that if I don’t constantly keep the importance of this in my face, it’ll slip away from me. It depends on our personality. Some people were born with the gift of love. Me? Not so much. So I’ll show you what I do to get into my ‘love state’.

Study the Scriptures

This step is crucial. We must be in our Word if we want to change our ways. For the Word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart (Hebrews 4:12). Don’t you know the song? “There is power in the name of Jesus to break every chain.” It’s true. The quickest way to see results is to spend time examining the character of God and the ministry of Jesus.

There are a whole lot of scriptures that express God’s love for us. The scriptures say He chose you before the foundations of the world that you would be holy and blameless before Him in love (see Ephesians 1:4). Because of His great love for you, He made you alive to Christ even while you were dead in your trespasses (see Ephesian 2:4-5). You’re the apple of His eye and He has your name tattooed on the palm of His hand. Read more

Welcome to the ‘Begin To Grow Your Spiritual Fruit’ Series!

“You will know them by their fruits.”

-Matthew 7:16

It’s clear that we should grow in the fruits of the Spirit. In this series, we will cover all the fruits and ways we can see growth in each area. I hope you enjoy it and thanks for joining us!

The Bible states that we can accurately evaluate if someone is a godly person by their actions. That doesn’t mean that godly people are perfect, but that they would have one or more of the following character traits:

Although it takes time, a believer in Christ should fully develop into all of these things. Typically, a believer in Christ should not be:

  • Hateful
  • Unhappy
  • Stressed
  • Impatient
  • Rude
  • Selfish
  • Harsh
  • Unreliable
  • Out of control

My goal is to help you to understand how you can grow out of these areas and into the fruits. I want to see the church of Christ get along and work with one another to save people. I want unsaved people to thirst for the living water from the well when they see our lives. That’s only going to happen if we change our actions (thereby changing our results). Read more

1. Turn Off Your Extension Cords When They’re Not In Use

Whenever something is plugged in, it keeps eating electricity until the flow is stopped. The good news is most extension cords have a button that you can easily switch on or off. This is the most simple way. However, if it doesn’t have the switch you can always just unplug them from the wall. This is good because most of the time we have a bunch of stuff plugged in at once resulting in more electricity being eaten. Cut that flow off and save your money!

2. Unplug Everything!

Except for your fridge. You don’t want to do that. I thought I would add this in here because it doesn’t just apply to extension cords. Everything eats electric when plugged in. Don’t believe me? Is your TV off? If it is, look at it. See that red light? That’s the standby light. That light is on to tell you that the TV is off. Pretty ridiculous right? Your TV eats electricity when it’s off just to tell you that it’s off. LAME!

The 9 Fruit Of The Spirit

“But the fruit of the spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such there is no law.”

-Galatians 5:22-23

Do you want to come up higher with God and experience numerous blessings? Do you want to impact the world around you and become a walking sermon? A great way to start is by growing in understanding of the fruit of the Spirit. I’m going to break them down to you and hopefully answer any question you may have about them.

Imagine traveling through a nature wonderland: orange trees, apple trees, peach trees, strawberry bushes, honeysuckles- anything you can imagine. The aroma would be amazing! Where would you begin? I know I love me some fresh peaches. Mmmm! But then imagine one scraggly tree, withering away screaming “Help me!” Among all the other trees, this one sticks out like a sore thumb. You walk over to it, concerned. It doesn’t make sense why this tree is the only one in a dead state because all the ones around it have abundant life. After analyzing it, you realize you don’t even know what kind of tree this is. There’s no leaves or fruit on it.

The bible describes the righteous as ‘a tree of life’. But in Matthew chapter 7, it’s clear that all people are compared to trees, whether good or bad. Jesus told the disciples that ‘by their fruits you will know them (v. 20).’ We don’t want to look like the tree in the description above. We want to be full of goodness that make people flock to us. People should speak well of you and your character. I understand that these things take time; just like a giant thick oak tree in your front lawn. The good news is that great, enormous tree once started as a little acorn.

When we become born again, everything that God is enters our spirit in seed form. As we water them with the water of the Word, our fruits begin to sprout. People start to notice there’s something different about you. In this post, we’ll explore each fruit of the Spirit to gain a deeper understanding of them and their meaning. Read more
