What are the benefits of drinking coffee?

Coffee is an affordable way to get caffeine into your system. It’s also really healthy for you! Plus, it tastes great! What’s not to love about coffee? To inform more people of the health benefits of coffee, I’ve come up with a list of awesome reasons why drinking coffee every day can be a wonderful idea.

A Bunch of Antioxidants

Scientists have discovered more than 1,000 antioxidants in coffee. Also, it’s loaded with vitamins. It has:

  • Thiamine (Vitamin B1)
  • Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
  • Niacin (Vitamin B3)
  • Pantothenic Acid (Vitamin B5)
  • Potassium
  • Manganese
  • Magnesium

These antioxidants combat inflammation which results in a lowered risk of developing a variety of diseases. On top of that, they regulate insulin levels. Having a healthier amount of insulin leads to a lower amount of uric acid (the lead cause of gout). Coffee is a much better choice than soda or juices filled with high fructose corn syrup. Read more

Multiple times in the Bible, it tells us to seek various things. Seek God, His righteousness, peace, His face; all sorts of stuff. Curiosity overcame me and I wanted to know: what does the word seek actually mean? Seeking God is something I long to do, but how can I achieve that? I became determined to study the word seek and get a deeper understand of its meaning.

The Word Seek In Hebrew

There’s a bunch of words in Hebrew that are used to describe the word seek. I think the easiest way to lay out this information would be to give the words, then define what they mean. The world we live in can be a very cruel one. From the media telling us we should look one way to the bully at school taunting our every move, it can be difficult to be okay with ourselves. It doesn’t matter what race you are or how old you are, insecurity attacks A LOT of people. The average number of suicides per year in America is 44,965. That number doesn’t even account for the number of people who attempt suicide.

But why?

Everyone has their own story. When I desired to take my life it was because I hated myself. In my eyes, I was disgusting. All the wrong I had done left me feeling nothing but shame. I felt ugly and unattractive. I believed things would never get better and that I was unlovable. Every relationship I had allowed myself to be open and vulnerable in ended in devastation. My heart was torn and beaten beyond recognition. An outer layer of stone formed. My conclusion to all the betrayal was that there must’ve been something wrong with me… right? Read more

You Absolutely Need To Stretch!

You Need To Stretch Featured Photo

Importance Of Stretching

Stretching may not seem like an important part of life, but it allows the body to warm up for the day. Have you noticed the first thing animals do when they awaken? They stretch! From their head to their toes, they make sure to stretch every muscle. Babies also stretch the second their eyes open. Have you ever witnessed a toddler get a cramp? Obviously, the answer’s no. Preparing your muscles beforehand ensures they’ll have the ability to endure strenuous activities.

Unfortunately, the average person in our society neglects this vital necessity to maintain their muscle strength. The majority of people feel older than what they actually are. Your chances of pulling a muscle, straining something, or damaging tissues increase if you do not stretch. After high school, most people stop participating in physical activity. However, once we become active again our bodies will adapt and become strong.  There are many benefits of stretching daily, so why not start today?

“We don’t stop playing because we grow old; We grow old because we stop playing.”

The dangers of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) are a real threat. It can cause heart disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, and so much more. When I began my health journey, I was incredibly shocked at how harmful this substance was. It’s more astonishing when you find out how many foods and beverages contain HFCS. I was a bit mad. No longer could I indulge in the foods I once loved. However, my commitment to myself and my family is more important than my pallet’s preferences.

I formed a habit of actively checking the ingredients of the products I purchase. We went on a mission to clear out our cabinets of anything without nutritional value. (A lot of foods left our home that day.) Here are some foods we were challenged to let go of and alternatives we’ve found to satisfy our cravings. Read more

8 Reasons Why You Should Quit Soda Today

Stop Drinking Soda Featured Photo

Reasons To Quit Soda Today

Soda was a normal thing in our household. I was raised to love it and we drank it every day. I didn’t make the decision to quit soda until in my twenties. It’s normal to drink soda regularly, isn’t it?

The only issue with soda is it’s incredibly unhealthy for you. (Like WAYY unhealthy!) It leads to many of the health problems we see in our culture today. The darn things are everywhere! You can go anywhere and order a Coke. The drink is also highly addictive. These companies know exactly what they’re doing to push revenues through the roof by ensuring you’ll purchase more in the future. After learning the health effects of consuming this soft drink, I chose to stand up and say, “No more!”

It was incredibly tough for me to stop drinking soda. The more I tried to stop, the more I wanted it. I was caught up in an addiction that I was determined to win. After failing multiple times, my victory finally prevailed. At last, I can say I’m free from carbonated drinks and I’m glad for it. However, many people give me weird looks when I politely decline soda. It makes me feel like an outcast.

Why should you not drink soda?

I know normal people drink soda, but I’m weird okay? I want to take care of my body and live as long as I can. Let’s examine some reasons why soda is so bad for the human body. (And why you should stay far away from it!) Read more

Self-Control

“For God did not give us a spirit of timidity or cowardice of fear, but [He has given us a spirit] of power and of love and of sound judgment and personal discipline [abilities that result in a calm, well-balanced mind self-control].”

-2 Timothy 1:7 AMPC

Woo! We finally made it to the last fruit of the Spirit. If you’re new to the series, you can view the other parts by clicking here. Either way, I’m so proud that you want to grow in the area of discipline and self-control. Many people do NOT reach their full potential because they aren’t willing to sacrifice. Discipline hurts. I get it. “Now no chastening seems to be joyful for the present, but painful; nevertheless afterward it yields the peaceable fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it (Hebrews 12:11).

Discipline produces freedom. It can create the life we truly desire. Nothing will happen without an action first occurring. Once an action is taken, then a result can be produced. If you want a different result, you must carry out a new action.

“You can suffer the pain of change or the pain of remaining the same.”

Faithfulness

“His lord said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your lord.”

-Matthew 25:21

Faithfulness means to be loyal without wavering. It’s vital in your walk with God to grow this fruit because the Lord is a jealous God. He expects to be number one and refuses to share you with any other ‘gods’. The relationship of Christ and the church is a representation of marriage. We know we shouldn’t cheat on our spouses, so why would we think it’s okay to cheat on God? One day we serve Him and the next we serve our selfishness. We have to make a decision and be determined that we will live for God and not for everyone else. Read more

Gentleness

“Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He will lift you up.”

-James 4:10

The word gentleness is the same quality as humility and meekness. They all mean this: submission to the Lord, knowing one’s sense of worth and mildness of temper. A humble person is not trying to impress others because they already know who they are in Christ. They carry themselves in authority and is aware of all that belongs to them.

A meek person has the ability to harness their emotions and dictate which actions they will take. A gentle person is not critical, sharp, or pressing. They’re understanding and know which words to speak at what moment.

This is probably the most difficult Christian virtue to master. It feels good to get revenge when it’s in your power to do so. A meek person allows the Lord to fight their fleshly battles while they obey Him by praying for that person and blessing them. A humble person is not puffed up. They know they can do nothing apart from God and rely on Him in all circumstances. It’s a great understanding of, “I’m not better than anyone else, but I have all power through Christ Jesus to do all that needs to be done on earth.”

The best way to grow in this area is to constantly be connected to the Holy Spirit and continually water the fruit with the Word. Try these tips below to really boost your humility walk. Read more

Goodness

“Depart from evil and do good.”

-Psalm 34:13

How are you feeling today? Did you wake up refreshed? Or did you have a hard time sleeping last night? Was it easy getting ready today or frustrating? And other people, how have they treated you today? All these things affect us, but the way to conquer those things is by keeping a good attitude. Things don’t have to be perfect (in fact, they never will be) for us to display the fruit of goodness. It’s a decision that we make. Decide, “I’m going to treat people good regardless of how I feel.”

I think it’s easy to forget the degree of Jesus’s sufferings. We remember him on the cross, but that was the end of His sufferings. The journey to the mount was way worse. His family tried to kill Him. The religious people of His day constantly plotted how they might overtake Him and kill Him. He lost a large portion of His followers when He told them He was the Living Bread and Water. John the baptist doubted Him. When Jesus needed His disciples to pray with Him and while He was sweating blood, they were snoozing away. One of His disciples betrayed Him and sold Him out for thirty shekels of silver. One of His best friends (someone who witness the transfiguration on the mount) denied Him.

He was beaten. They blindfolded Him and hit his face. Then, at the only hope of being released the town’s people shouted for the release of a murderer instead of Jesus. He was assigned to carry His own cross up a hill. Upon fainting, they appointed Simon to help Him. He was on the cross for 6 hours. That’s 360 minutes! He didn’t curse anyone or plot for revenge…. He just prayed for them.

Kindness

“Let nothing be done through selfish ambition or conceit, but lowliness of mind let each esteem others better than himself. Let each of you look out not only for his own interests, but also for the interests of others.”

-Phillippians 2:3-4

Kindness can be described as a few things: compassion, generosity, tenderness, sweetness. When fully developed, this fruit of the Spirit is the salt and light of the world. This makes people stand out in today’s society. It touches the souls of others and can cause tears to flow. There’s a golden rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. (Treat others the way you want to be treated.)

There are plenty of ways we can practice sharing kindness with people. In this article, I’ll share a few ideas with you.

Greet People And Smile

I personally love when people greet me. It’s a form of respect from one fellow human to another. Smiling is communicating. It’s just as effective as a, ”hello”. As much as some hate to admit, we all need one another. Every relationship began with some sort of acknowledgment. Start with a smile, and if you feel led by God, start a conversation. That person may end up becoming a new friends of yours. Even if they don’t, you can still make a difference in their life.

One day, I had to go to Shoprite. I wanted to go to the one by my house, but God told me to go to the one across town. Although I didn’t know why, I decided to obey and traveled the 15 minutes to arrive there. In my parked vehicle, I prayed and said, “I don’t know why I’m here. But I believe you sent me so allow me to be aware of my surroundings. Show me where you need me.” Then, I went inside and began to shop as usual. Read more

Patience

“Therefore, as God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience.”

-Colossians 3:12 NIV

Patience is lacking in our world today. People are so quick to get mad and curse someone out if they did an action they didn’t agree with. I saw a video of this lady yelling at McDonald’s team members because they were out of cookies. It was extremely sad because humans are not perfect (and as someone who used to work in fast food, things run out from time to time). Under the video, the comment section was filled with people who were rooting her on. They were saying things like, “I know that’s right!” and “That will teach them.”

Especially in a work situation, people are usually trying their best with what they are given. I remember one night of work, there was a limited supply of chicken (due to a lack of management). I was the shift leader that night and countless people spoke very nasty to me. It wasn’t my fault! I was doing the best I had with the little that remained. The few people who were still sweet to me refreshed my inner man. That was a HORRIBLE night of work!

Because of that job I had, I grew A LOT in patience. It takes a great amount to agitate me. But even I have my moments where I feel like I’m gonna lose it. That’s because we aren’t meant to deal with situations in our own strength. When we’re connected to the Holy Spirit, we have the ability to wait like He does. Try these things next time you’re in a trying circumstance.

Peace

“And let the peace that comes from Christ rule in your hearts. For as members of one body you are called to live in peace. And always be thankful.”

-Colossians 3:15 NLT

The world would be such a better place if we all lived at peace with one another. Could you imagine? It’d be like the movies where all the neighbors get along and know each other by name. People would share with others and love would spread. We’d have more friends than enemies and I believe the world itself would be a brighter place.

Unfortunately, the sad truth is our world is not currently in that state. Certain neighborhoods are cluttered with crime and hatred. I don’t understand what causes someone to murder a person. Now a days, there’s articles of parents killing their own child. If a person could do that to their own offspring, what would they be willing to do to a random human in their way?

Although we can’t change the entire world, we can start with the person in the mirror. The Bible teaches us to be the light of this world. Let’s learn how to become part of the solution. Read more
