If there’s one thing that we cannot live without, it’s protein. The benefits of protein seem almost unlimited! Our bodies will always require a healthy amount to function properly. It helps create stronger hair and nails, burning calories, regulating blood sugar levels, and so much more! Let’s dig deeper into some ways an increase in protein may benefit your lifestyle.

Have you ever heard of thermic effect of food (TEF)? This cool term simply means your body is burning more calories while digesting protein compared to other foods. Our body is always burning calories and this substance is harder for the body to break down. This results in your body working harder. By consuming more protein, you can burn up to 15% more calories by doing absolutely nothing!

Another great thing about protein is it causes us to feel full longer. We won’t be driven to eat as much because we won’t be hungry so soon after eating. That’s why it’s a great idea to snack on treats that are high in protein like premier bars (30g) or Okios yogurt (15g). Isn’t that a great way to control food cravings? Plus, a lack of protein makes the metabolism slow down resulting in weight gain.

Build Muscle

In order to build, repair, and maintain muscle, your body needs protein. You should consume it immediately after exercise (when your muscles are most needy). Your muscles will gobble it right up and your body will begin to work on recovering itself from soreness. Definitely consider buying some sort of protein powder. It’s the easiest and quickest way to get protein. If you can’t stand the taste of powdered forms (like me), there are really great tasting ones out there. The last one I had was fruity pebble flavored protein and it was delicious! I think the next one I’m going to try will be the cookies & cream one. Yum!

Be aware that low calorie diets may put you at risk for losing muscle mass. By eating foods rich in protein, you can lose weight without losing muscle. Remember: if you don’t use it, you’ll lose it!


Protein supports all sorts of tendons, ligaments, and body tissues. Ensuring you receive enough will help keep your body strong for many years to come. Nevertheless, if you hurt yourself protein can assist a body heal after an injury.

Fight Against Bone Disease

Protein helps our body absorb calcium, which is the main necessity for great bone health. With stronger bones, we can reduce our chances of bone related injuries or diseases such as osteoporosis. As you grow in age, be sure to keep this great substance a large portion of your diet. The last thing anyone wants is to suffer from a broken bone.

Fight Heart Disease And Regulate Sugar

A great quality of protein is the fact it regulates sugar levels. Therefore, it helps fight against the development of diabetes and obesity. Also, it’s a natural remedy for high blood pressure. Blood pressure can lead to heart failure, stroke, and even a heart attack.

On top of these things listed above, protein helps improve concentration, learning abilities, and raises energy levels naturally. How cool is that?!
